Who do you think you are? Introduction to Genealogy Description This class will provide an introduction and guide into finding out about your ancestors and creating your family tree. Using the internet you will learn how to find your ancestors on the census and trace your family history back, through Birth, Marriage and Death records and property records. Practical advice and guidance will be given and by the end of the 6 week course, your family tree will have grown and produced many branches. Basic computer skills are needed to participate in this course. Week 1: Advice on preparing your family Pedigree Group Sheets. Locating your ancestors’ plots in graveyards, through the use of your local library or online. Week 2: Websites and Online research • Finding your families records on the 1901 and 1911 census records. • Checking fragments of Pre-1901 census records for your family • Genealogy Websites: “the free to view” and the “pay to view” Week 3: Civil records • Civil Records of births, marriages and deaths since 1864. Online indexes and • Guide to the General Register Office in Dublin. Week 4: Church Records • Church records: Parish registers of Roman Catholic, Church of Ireland, Presbyterian and other denominations. Week 5: Land and Property records • Property Valuation Records: Griffith’s valuation online, Tithe Applotment books, • Valuation Office Records and Ordinance Survey Maps Online Week 6: Conclusion • Class Presentations of their family tree showing Birth, Marriage and Death dates for their ancestors and a short history of their family.
